via Khmer Times, 09 May 2024: This is an addendum to yesterday’s news article; the Apsara National Authority has assured that expert archaeological studies and technical procedures were conducted before using heavy machinery to restore an ancient pond at Bayon Temple. Despite concerns from the Khmer Will Party about potential structural damage, ANA confirms the process adheres to safety standards, with oversight from archaeologists and engineers, and approval from ICC Angkor.
Son Chhay, Vice-President of the Khmer Will Party, last week requested clarification from ANA regarding the use of heavy machinery at the ancient pond, citing concerns about the lack of archaeological expert supervision and adherence to proper technical procedures at the site.
He expressed concerns that the restoration approach might be technically flawed, potentially leading to collapse or structural damage to the temple and disturbing hidden artefacts. “The excavations I have seen typically involve archaeologists using very small, hand-held tools to avoid touching or damaging small, hard-to-see objects,” he said.
Long Kosal, ANA spokesman, responded by stating that the authority had publicly detailed the restoration process of the ancient pond in front of the temple, and that the proper technical procedures were followed, contrary to the allegations.
