Tourists behaving badly: Butt naked in Thailand

via Bangkok Post, 30 Nov 2017: This news came out last week while I was away on a work trip, but a pair of tourists have been detained in Thailand for taking selfies of their bare butt in Bangkok’s Wat Arun. They now face several charges including jail time. We have seen other tourists getting in trouble previously for stripping in Angkor and Bagan, so we can say that these two are literally a pair of dumb asses.

Two American men who posted photos of themselves with their rear ends exposed on their “Travelling butts” Instagram travel page at the capital’s famous Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) could face seven years in jail.

Tourists behaving badly, in Bagan now

Coconuts Yangon, 07 June 2017: Naked tourists strike again, this time in Bagan. Some badly behaved tourists decided to strip naked at the sacred temples of Bagan and post it on Instragram. The photos were later taken down, but not before their actions were already captured.

You know, considering that Bagan is literally strewn with signs warning foreigners of dressing inappropriately, you would think that they’d get the hint. However, it seems as though at least one foreigner went screw it, and decided to do away with clothing altogether.

Yesterday, model Warso Moe Oo drew attention to the Instagram account cheekyexploits which, as the name suggests, displays photos of people baring their butts. While we didn’t realize there was an entire part of the internet dedicated to such a bizarre ‘hobby,’ there’s obviously no harm done, right? Well, there wouldn’t be, except a recent post shows a white woman baring her butt in what is supposedly Bagan, according to their geotag.

Another trio of tourists deported for taking pants off in Angkor

Yet again, tourists were caught last week taking photos of themselves with their pants down in the Ta Prohm temple. I really think it’s time to start meting out stiff punishments like actual jail time rather than suspended sentences and deportations.

Siem Reap Provincial Court yesterday suspended prison sentences for three foreign tourists convicted of taking photos of their naked buttocks at Angkor Archaeological Park and ordered they be deported.

Italian Bruno Margrini, 30, Argentinean Luciano Gaston Munoz, 30, and Dutch national Kiri Stamou, 19, were arrested on Monday afternoon after being caught taking photos with their pants down by guards at the Ta Prohm temple.

Their arrest marks the third time this year foreign travellers have been busted taking nude photos at the historic World Heritage Site.

While noting the trio’s remorse, judge Hok Pov yesterday handed Margrini and Munoz a seven-month suspended sentence and fined them $315. Stamou, meanwhile, received a six-month suspended sentence and $200 fine.

Roundup: Naked tourism in Angkor

An AP story rounds up the recent spate of incidents involving tourists taking nude photos of themselves and talks about Cambodian reaction to the affairs (Naturally, they are offended). One of the perpetrating Frenchmen who was deported for taking nude photos made a puzzling statement by saying that the case demonstrates the “endemic corruption” in Cambodia – I fail to see how that is connected to his inability to keep his pants on.

Anger at Angkor: Cambodians upset over naked western tourists at temples

Cambodia’s most popular tourist attraction – the complex of ancient temples that includes Angkor Wat – is suffering from a form of overexposure. At least five foreign visitors have been arrested and deported this year for taking nude photos at the sacred sites.

Authorities have no tolerance for people stripping off at Angkor archaeological park, a sprawling Unesco World Heritage Site that drew 2 million visitors last year. The incidents are also upsetting to ordinary Cambodians, for whom the Khmer-era complex, built between the ninth and 15th centuries, holds enormous spiritual and historical significance.

“Angkor Wat is the most famous sacred … temple in Cambodia, where everyone, not only tourists but also Cambodians themselves, has to pay respect,” said Rattanak Te, an administrative assistant who lives in Phnom Penh, the capital. “It definitely upsets me and all Cambodians, because outsiders will think we Cambodian people are careless and do not take good care of this World Heritage [site] by allowing these tourists to do such an unacceptable act.”

Reflections on naked temple shoots

A spate of nude photographs taken in Angkor has been in the news lately (see here, here, here, here, here and here), and for people shaking their heads, the big question is why anyone would want to do this in the first place. Fundamentally, it is a lack of respect from visitors to the site. I’ve seen my Cambodian friends call out other Cambodians for not dressing appropriately when visiting the temples, and the reason they do not call tourists out on it is because they are aware of how important tourism is to the economy (and often, the reluctance to use an angry tone of voice towards guests). So it’s very distasteful when your guests take advantage of your hospitality and act extremely inappropriately in a sacred you hold sacred. I personally would not mind if there are stiffer penalties against people who are caught taking nude photos in the temples: stiffer fines and actual jail time (instead of suspended sentences and deportation). Linked are two pieces, one from the Phnom Penh Post and one from my colleague Dr Alison Carter on the matter.

The real problem with taking naked photos at Angkor
Alison in Cambodia, 13 February 2015

Pundits are split on how to tackle a spate of “offensive” naked photos taken by tourists at the Angkor Archaeological Park in recent weeks, with suggestions ranging from ignoring the antics to overhauling visitation to the World Heritage site.

In less than a month, the Kingdom has kicked out seven foreigners for public nudity, including two American sisters and three French tourists who, in separate cases, disrobed at different ancient temples in the Siem Reap complex and posed for pictures.

Further, the Apsara Authority, which manages the archaeological site and has vowed to boost security in response, is investigating two more sets of naked pictures taken amid the ruins, including one captioned “hakuna matata” that features a naked couple wearing animal masks.

Yet again, another nude surfaces

A new set of nude photographs taken in Angkor surfaces. Intentionally not linked to source.

The Phnom Penh Post reports that yet another incidence of taking nude photos is being investigated, this time by a German photographer. This is the fourth incident in recent weeks.

The naked temple pics just keep on coming
Phnom Penh Post, 12 February 2015

Apsara is investigating yet another naked photo allegedly taken at the Angkor Archaelogical Park in Siem Reap.

Captioned “Hakuna Matata” (“no worries”), the picture, appearing on the website of 25-year-old German photographer Simon Lohmeyer, shows a couple naked at the ancient temple, posing with monkey masks.

Also shared on Facebook, the snap is the latest to cause a stir with the Cambodian authorities who on Saturday deported two American sisters for taking photos of each other’s bare buttocks at the temples. Their deportation came just a week after three French tourists were booted for “exposure of sexual organs” at the Banteay Kdei temple.

Nudes in heritage sites not just confined in Cambodia

Just indexing the rest of the stories from the latest tourists behaving badly at Angkor. According to one article, the phenomenon of tourists taking nudes in Angkor is not unique, and there have been cases reported at other heritage sites. Whatever happened to good old fashioned planking?

Cambodia: Stop taking nude photos in our temples!

The headline goes without saying. This story was filed after the French tourists were deported for taking lewd photos in Angkor, but not before two Americans were caught for doing the same.

A senior Cambodian culture official has urged foreign tourists to avoid taking pornographic photos at all Cambodian cultural sites since such a action is against the country’s culture and tradition.

The call came after several photos of an Asian woman posing nude at ancient Cambodian temples went viral online in recent weeks and then, three French tourists were arrested and given a six-month suspended sentence by a Cambodian court on Saturday for taking nude photos at the complex of the famed Angkor Wat Temple.

Not again! Another pair of tourists caught taking nude photos at Angkor

I don’t know if this is some kind of new trend, or just another act of gross stupidity. A pair of tourists, American this time, were caught taking nude photos at Preah Khan. Like the previous French tourists, they were fined, deported and given suspended sentences. Perhaps it is time to give such tourists mandatory jail time?

Two American sisters are arrested in Cambodia for taking naked photos inside the Angkor temple complex, officials say.

Two American sisters have been arrested in Cambodia for taking naked photos of each other inside the country’s famed Angkor temple complex in the latest nude stunt by tourists to spark anger, officials say.

Lindsey Adams, 22, and her 20-year-old sister Leslie were discovered taking “nude pictures” inside the Preah Khan temple at the world heritage site on Friday, the Apsara Authority – the government agency managing the Angkor complex – said in a statement.
