via various sources, 14 March 2024: Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts plans to nominate “Khmer Marriage” for inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, highlighting the unique traditions of Cambodian weddings. The proposal aims to showcase and preserve the rich cultural heritage associated with Khmer marriage ceremonies, known for their elaborate rituals, music, and symbolism.
The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts said that it will apply to include “Khmer Marriage” in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
Siyon Sophearith, director of General Department of Cultural Technology of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said yesterday that the Ministry of Culture wants to propose Khmer marriage to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural List.
Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, organised a workshop on “Marriage in Cambodian Society” at the ministry to initiate the document preparation for the UNESCO heritage list which was attended by 12 participants, comprising researchers, musicians, priests and salon representatives at the ministry on Monday.
