via Kompas, 27 October 2023: The Gambuh Buddha Kecapi art performance, held at Puri Klungkung in Bali, aims to preserve and elevate the classical Balinese art form of Gambuh. Originating in the 15th century, Gambuh is a comprehensive theatrical experience that incorporates dance, literature, and music. The recent performance adapted the tale of Buddha Kecapi and was part of the closing activities for Saraswati Sewana Literature 2023.
Gambuh is a classical dance drama that originated in Bali during the 15th century CE. Gambuh is seen as a form of total theater, which showcases dance art, literary art, music art, and others as a single performance.
Another unique feature of Gambuh is the dominance of flute sounds in the performance of the classical dance drama. As a form of classical art, Gambuh is considered the most complete and rich form of art with various dance moves.
Gambuh is closely related to the Klungkung kingdom, Majapahit and the Panji story. As is known, the Klungkung Kingdom in Bali is the successor to the Gelgel Kingdom. This kingdom is known as the heir to the Majapahit Kingdom. Ida Dalem Semara Putra, penglingsir or leader of Puri Agung Klungkung, said that the history of the Klungkung Kingdom is closely linked to the Gajah Mada expedition around the 14th century AD.
