The Thai ministry of Tourism is making Ayutthaya a role model for other provinces in the region to develop tourism in Thailand’s central basin. Chief of the provinces’ tourism products is the historic city and Unesco World Heritage site of the same name.

History-rich Ayutthaya seeks resurgence

Ayutthaya missed out on its dream of hosting the 2020 World Expo, but the ancient capital is moving on as it was recently picked by the Tourism and Sports Ministry as a tourism development role model for for other provinces in the central basin.
The city was chosen because the province has a variety of tourism products including 900 temples, the second-highest tally after Nakhon Ratchasima, and the 2,017-rai Historic City of Ayutthaya, a Unesco World Heritage site. The old town is full of historical records and the province is the origin of the desserts foi thong, thong yib and thong yod as well as muay Thai.
