via Antara, 21 May 2024: The Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has introduced a protection scheme for Bali’s Subak system, a traditional community water management method. This initiative aims to balance the conservation of Subak’s cultural and social significance with Bali’s economic and tourism interests. The scheme focuses on reducing tourism impact on upstream areas while promoting sustainable tourism in downstream regions, ensuring the preservation of this UNESCO-recognized heritage.
The Directorate General of Culture of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) is implementing the Subak protection scheme in Bali to ensure that it remains relevant to economic and tourism interests.
“Subak is a sacred area, and it is upstream. It is best to reduce visits to that area. Let the water flow downstream,” Director General of Culture of the ministry, Hilman Farid, stated at the 10th World Water Forum press conference here on Tuesday.
Subak is a Balinese community water system that is subject to customary law and has social, agricultural, and religious characteristics, with a spirit of mutual cooperation in an effort to obtain water to meet the needs of food crops, especially rice and secondary crops.
