Thailand’s Si Thep and Cambodia’s Koh Ker were recently inscribed as world heritage sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
The status is both a blessing and a curse: While it highlights the historical value of both archeological sites, it also attracts potential looters as well as many more visitors, who may unwittingly cause damage.
What makes both sites so special? What should be done to protect them? And how can stolen artefacts be returned to their place of origin?
