via ABC News, 2 September 2022: Southeast Asia’s dependence on China in the last decade for tourism means that its recovery has been much slower, and will continue to be for the forseeable future.
Data released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in early August showed international tourism in the Asia Pacific region was experiencing the slowest recovery of anywhere in the world.
While international arrivals in Europe are down 30 per cent on 2019 levels, in the Asia Pacific region they are down 90 per cent.
The region’s slow recovery is mostly due to its dependence on Chinese tourists, who are still unable to travel because of China’s current COVID-19 travel policies.
