via The Standard, 07 February 2020: An article about Angkor’s transition to Theravada Buddhism, told through the monuments in Angkor Thom. Article is in Thai, and written with a perspective of understanding Thai Buddhism today.

นอกจากปราสาทบายนและพระราชวังหลวงที่ถือเป็นจุดเด่นของเมืองนครธมแล้ว ถ้าใครเคยไปเที่ยวจะเห็นได้ว่า ตลอดถนนสองข้างทางนั้นมีวัดพุทธอยู่หลายแห่ง ที่เห็นชัดๆ คือรอบปราสาทบายนมีวัดที่ยังมีพระสงฆ์และแม่ชีประจำวัดมากถึง 3 แห่งด้วยกัน นักท่องเที่ยวส่วนใหญ่อาจคิดว่าเป็นวัดใหม่ ก็จะละเลย ไม่ได้เข้าไปดู บ้างก็ไม่มีเวลา ไกด์ไม่พาเข้าไปบ้าง หรือไม่ ความยิ่งใหญ่ของปราสาทบายนก็บดบังความน่าสนใจของวัดพวกนี้ไปเสีย

ทว่า ในแง่มุมของการศึกษาโบราณคดีแล้ว วัดเหล่านี้ถือได้ว่าเป็นหลักฐานที่สำคัญมาก เพราะแสดงถึงการเปลี่ยนผ่านทางศาสนา จากเดิมที่นับถือพุทธศาสนามหายานไปสู่ศาสนาพุทธเถรวาท และยังสัมพันธ์กับประวัติศาสตร์ของอยุธยาอีกด้วย

บทความนี้ ผมจะพาไปสำรวจวัดเหล่านี้อย่างคร่าวๆ เผื่อโอกาสหน้าผู้อ่านมีโอกาสไปจะได้พินิจเยี่ยมชมวัดกลุ่มนี้มากขึ้น จะได้เก็บเกี่ยวอะไรมากกว่าการไปดูปราสาทนครวัด ปราสาทบายน เพียงอย่างเดียว
