Lenggong Valley needs much work for 2014 deadline

Local experts caution the need for proper management in order for the Lenggong Valley archaeological area to be ready for a 2014 deadline for its World Heritage Site inscription. Among the chief problems are the lack of adequate protections for the numerous archaeological sites in the area, and proper infrastructure in order to facilitate safe and non-invasive tourist access to these areas.

Since being declared as a world heritage site, the authorities have failed to barricade the area, making it easy for people to walk in and out. The lack of proper management may soon jeopardise the site.

ON June 30, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) declared Lenggong Valley in Hulu Perak as a world heritage site.

The declaration was made following the discovery of artifacts, which were more than 1.8 million years old, through excavation works by the country’s archaeologists.
