via Khmer Times, 30 July 2024: The Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration enforces a ban on new construction near Banteay Chhmar Temple to preserve its eligibility for UNESCO World Heritage status. The temple, dating to the 12th century and dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism, requires protection from illegal construction that could jeopardize its inclusion on the list. Local officials emphasize the importance of this measure for boosting tourism and national pride.
“The Banteay Chhmar site is a candidate to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, so construction in any area adjacent to the temple is banned by the Ministry of Culture,” said Nong Vuthy, deputy director of Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration.
Banteay Meanchey Provincial Department of Culture Director Yong Taing Kouy provided Khmer Times with further context regarding the construction policy.
“Preventing housing construction is a real issue there because Banteay Chhmar Temple is ready to be included in the World Heritage List,” Kouy said yesterday. “If construction were to go forward using the wrong techniques – or if it is done illegally and we don’t prevent it – then it’s possible that Banteay Chhmar Temple won’t be included on the World Heritage List.”
