Management of shipwrecks in Indonesian waters has varied over the years: from no formal protection, to legalised commercial salvage, to a complete moratorium on commercial involvement. Now, Indonesia’s new Omnibus Law has the potential to change the legislative framework yet again.
Using the 9th century Belitung wreck as a case study, Dr Natali Pearson (University of Sydney), expert in Indonesia’s underwater cultural heritage, will examine how this shifting regulatory landscape reflects the changing values ascribed to shipwrecks in Indonesian waters, and the implications for archipelago’s rich maritime histories.
