via Manila Times, 10 November 2023: The National Historical Commission of the Philippines officially unveiled a historical marker for the Sheik Karimul Makhdum Mosque in Simunul, Tawi-Tawi. This mosque, built in 1380 by Sheik Karimul Makhdum, an Arab Islamic preacher, is the first Islamic worship site in the Philippines.
THE National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), led by Chairman Emmanuel Franco Calairo, unveiled the historical marker, “Sheik Karimol-Makhdum Mosque in Tubig-Indangan, Simunul, Tawi-Tawi,” on Nov. 7, 2023 at 8 a.m.
Calairo officially turned over the marker to Simunul Mayor Wasilah Abdurahman. NHCP Deputy Executive Director Alvin Alcid witnessed the signing of the certificate of transfer.
