• Brunei’s archaeology does not get nearly enough attention.⠀
⠀
For this bonus post, I’m looking at Kota Batu Archaeological Park, the site of Brunei’s old capital. It is not a spectacular ruin in the usual sense — no towering temples, no monumental gateways — but its fragments tell a fascinating story: tombs, ceramics, sandstone pillar bases, river defences, house posts, imported wares, and traces of a working port city.⠀
⠀
Kota Batu shows Brunei not as a quiet corner of Southeast Asian archaeology, but as part of the maritime world that linked Borneo with China, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and beyond.

  • New this week in Southeast Asian Archaeology: the Plain of Jars, trade beads, burial rituals, Philippine obsidian, coastal watchtowers, public archaeology, and a museum rethink of the galleon trade.⠀
⠀
The lead story is a new paper from Laos, where one huge jar at Site 75 contained the remains of at least 37 people and hints at a long, careful mortuary tradition. From there, the issue moves across the region, with a particularly strong run of stories from the Philippines on exchange networks, local histories, and the stories archaeology tells in public.⠀

  • The Ayala Museum’s Gold of Ancestors exhibition showcases over a thousand gold objects, many originating from Butuan and the Surigao Treasure and generally dated to the 10th–13th centuries CE. These pieces demonstrate the Philippines’ participation in extensive regional trade networks and the high level of craftsmanship achieved before Spanish colonisation.

Vacancy: Lecturer in South East Asian Art

Scholarship opportunity at SOAS for an online course with a Certificate in Asian Art. The deadline for applications is 26 March 2023.

We’re delighted to announce that SOAS University of London is offering a full fee scholarship to complete an online Postgraduate Certificate in Asian Art. This programme includes a core thematic module – Asia’s Art Histories – in which you explore the diverse artistic traditions of Asia through a series of weekly themes. Alongside Asia’s Art Histories you will also complete two supporting courses, Analysing and Exploring the Arts, and an Independent Study project in Asian Art History.

This full-time programme is delivered entirely online, accessible from anywhere in the world, and begins this April. The majority of teaching is pre-recorded, enabling you to integrate the programme with your personal schedule.

The scholarship includes a full fee waiver and applications are assessed on academic merit based on your qualifications, experience, personal statement and a short writing sample. The deadline for applications is Sunday 26 March 2023. For more information regarding the scholarship opportunity, please click here.

We’re offering an Online Open Day (via Zoom) on Thursday 16th March at both 9.00am and 4.00pm (UK time) and you can register to attend by following this link. The open day will be an opportunity for you to hear more about Asia’s Art Histories and the scholarship on offer from our Programme Director and module Co-Convenor, Dr Malcolm McNeill, as well as an opportunity to ask any questions you may have directly.
