via Cebu Daily News, 01 April 2021: The Liberty Shrine commemorates both Ferdinand Magellan and Lapu Lapu, who defeated the former’s forces in 1521.
The Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City is now ready for the commemoration of the 500 years of the Kadaugan sa Mactan on April 27.
The Nation Quincentennial Committee announced that the National Historical Commission of the Philippines’ Materials Research Conservation Division (NHCP MRCD) already completed its conservation works on the 1866 Magellan Obelisk.
In an advisory, NCQ said that earlier this year, the Lapu-Lapu City Government, under the guidance of the NHCP, also repainted the ca. 1981 Lapulapu Monument at the Liberty Shrine.
“Similarly, the NHCP MRCD has already done in conserving the 1980 Antonio Pigafetta Monument at Plaza Independencia, Cebu City,” the advisory reads.
