via Manila Times, 05 June 2024: Manila Mayor Maria Sheilah Lacuna-Pangan seeks to add more historical markers in the city to honor those who contributed to its rich history. At the 143rd anniversary of “Kagitingan sa Bangkusay,” she highlighted the need to remember local heroes, including Rajah Matanda, during the Manila Day celebrations.
Manila Mayor Maria Sheilah Lacuna-Pangan said she wants more historical markers honoring people who contributed to the rich and colorful history of the country’s capital.
Lacuna-Pangan on Tuesday led the celebration of the 143rd anniversary of the “Kagitingan sa Bangkusay” at Moriones Plaza in Tondo, Manila. The day commemorates the heroism of warriors from Hagonoy, Bulacan, and Macabebe, Pampanga, who sacrificed their lives to resist the Spanish colonizers in 1571.
“It may have been 453 years, but I believe that this historical record will never be left behind by time because there is no time to pay tribute to the countrymen who put the country before themselves,” she said.
