via Khmer Times, 01 May 2024: In Kampong Speu province, Cambodia, villagers recently discovered a Shiva linga and yoni dating from the Funan era (550AD to 800AD) while cultivating land. Sun Meanchey, the Provincial Department of Culture and Fine Arts director, highlighted the collaborative effort between the community and local authorities in preserving these significant artifacts.
Villagers in Kampong Speu province unearthed a Shiva linga and yoni while they were cultivating a field in Boeng Toap Pyuh village, Chong Ruk commune’s Kong Pisei district and handed the relics over to the local department of culture.
Sun Meanchey, director of the Provincial Department of Culture and Fine Arts, said yesterday that a villager unearthed the artefacts last Friday, which are carved from sandstone and black basalt.
He said that archaeologists have determined that the items are a pre-Angkorian style made between 550AD to 800AD, most likely during the Funan era.
