From Cambodia’s Jungles to Venice’s Canals: The Heritage Sites Up for UNESCO Scrutiny

via AFP/ Barron’s, 10 September 2023: UNESCO is meeting in Riyadh to update its World Heritage List, with over 50 new sites vying for inclusion including Cambodia’s Koh Ker and Thailand’s Si Thep with other sites possibly marked “in danger” and others facing potential downgrades.

This year’s applicants for inclusion on the list — 53 including a backlog from last year when the meeting, scheduled in Russia, was cancelled because of the war — features a large number of little known venues, such as Koh Ker, a remote site in the northern Cambodian jungle with several archaeological sites dating back to the Khmer empire.
