For decades, the Gigantes Islands (Norte and Sur) in northern Iloilo have been associated with ancient potteries. Since the accidental discovery of a burial jar in the 1970s, there have been waves of systematic treasure hunting activities in the islands — the biggest of which was possibly in 1997. Hordes of antique collectors flocked to Gigantes, and nearly all surface in Barangay Asluman had been overturned by locals excavating for and successfully recovering potteries, jars and colorful beads. Amidst all these, several questions stand out: Where did all these potteries come from? How old were they? Who and what were the people that once inhabited these islands?

To answer these questions, the National Museum of the Philippines conducted an archeological survey of the Gigantes Islands (Norte and Sur) beginning May 24.
