via New Straits Times, 05 December 2021: A rejoinder to yesterday’s article deploring the state of the George Town World Heritage site, written by the General Manager of the George Town World Heritage Incorporated. Another article highlighted below is a similar rebuttal showcasing various heritage conservation awards won in Penang in the last year alone.
George Town World Heritage Incorporated, as the site manager of the George Town Heritage City of the Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca World Heritage Site, is most disappointed with the biased opinions expressed in the article “Decaying state of George Town’s Unesco World Heritage Site” (NST, Nov 30).
It lacks sensitivity and appreciation for the long-term efforts of George Town’s cultural heritage custodians, including the community, heritage building owners, heritage professionals, and government agencies and non-governmental organisations that have contributed to the conservation of the George Town Heritage City.
The exceptional charm of George Town Heritage City as a cultural heritage site lies in the tangible and living cultural heritage of this town.
