Public archaeology is a sub-discipline of archaeology that examines the relationship between archaeology and the public. The practice of public archaeology is embedded in any archaeological activity that interacted or had the potential to interact with the public, such as politics and policy, cultural heritage management, museums, indigenous rights and nationalism, tourism, heritage education, public engagement and outreach. In Malaysia, public archaeology is a relatively new discipline, and the literature dedicated to this subject is extremely scarce. However, public archaeology has long been introduced into the field of archaeology, either through various archaeological activities that involving the public (non-archaeologist) or through a project or program that is specifically designed for archaeological outreach for the public. The application of public archaeology practice takes place through many mediums such as in tourism, museum visitation, social media and outreach programs, to name a few. This presentation provides a brief overview of the contemporary public archaeology practice in Malaysia and further explores the role of museums in enhancing public appreciation and understanding of our archaeological heritage.
