via Khmer Times, 16 July 2020: Monks usually have the last say over construction in their respective wats, so this arrangement is done to accommodate the construction laws within the Angkor Archaeological Park. The Chief Monk of Siem Reap has previously asked local temples to follow the instructions of the Apsara Authority.
Siem Reap provincial authorities have reiterated monks and the Monk Council in the Angkor Archaeological Park must ask for prior permission from relevant authorities and institutions before relocating, repairing or building on ancient structures in their pagodas, to avoid accidents or damage.
The instruction was made during a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the preservation of ancient temples in pagodas, the prevention of encroachment on state land and of state-land grabbing.
Siem Reap provincial administration said yesterday the meeting also discussed the implementation of activities to prevent the demolition or relocation of 50-year-old ancient buildings and the construction of new buildings at pagodas in the province, especially at those located in the historical site of the Angkor Archaeological Park.
