via Macau Business,17 February 2022: The accounts of the first <a href="https://www.southeastasianarchaeology.com/tag/portuguese/">Portuguese</a> in China have been translated into Chinese. <blockquote>The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) published a collection of the first reports written in the 16th century by Portuguese who visited China, translated into Chinese. The ‘Anthology of Portuguese Travelers in China’ includes texts by the Catholic missionaries São Francisco Xavier, Melchior Carneiro Leitão and Gaspar da Cruz, the overseer João de Barros and the soldier Galeote Pereira, as well as excerpts from the ‘Peregrinação’, by Fernão Mendes Pinto. In a statement, the IC stressed that the objective is to allow Chinese readers to “better understand” both the history of the arrival of the Portuguese in China and the image of the Ming dynasty in the eyes of Westerners.
