Next Friday, I’ll also be giving a talk with the Singapore Friends of the Museum and the Asian Civilisations Museum about the rock art of Southeast Asia. Join me if you can – register here.
Southeast Asian Archaeology from a Rock Art Perspective
Date: Friday 20 November, 2020
Time: 7 pm (Singapore)
Venue: Zoom
Over the past decade, there has been an increase in rock art research in Southeast Asia, a marked shift in what was once thought to be an obscure and unprofitable avenue of research. From direct dates of rock art sites going back to the Pleistocene, the constant discovery of new sites, and to the emergence of regional styles, we are beginning to see an archaeology of rock art beyond the identification and interpretation of images. In this presentation Noel Hidalgo Tan will show how rock art expands on our understanding of Southeast Asia’s past in reflecting ancient and recent human migrations, recording our changing relationship with the environment, and providing a window into the material world of the past.
