It was taken in Son La province of Vietnam in a Hmong village. This family was friends with the group of Vietnamese people I was travelling with. The little girl in the photo is dressed in traditional clothing and is about to dance and sing for us. This village was displaced from their original land high on the mountains by the government. They were given this land as compensation but are not particularly happy as it doesn’t fit the way their culture has been living for thousands of years.

Photo relates to Southeast Asian Archaeology and particularly a lovely and friendly Hmong schoolgirl I came across during my doctoral fieldwork at the Plain of Jars, Laos. I was captivated by her toothy smile but felt very sad for her heavy load and because she should have been at school rather than carrying a heavy load on her thin, child-like shoulders.
