For the first time, Malaysia will be contesting for a seat in the World Heritage Committee.

Commissioner of Heritage Prof Emeritus Datuk Zuraina Majid is the candidate chosen to represent Malaysia.

Malaysia was ready to be appointed to the seat as it had been protecting and preserving its heritage according to the Heritage Act, said Information Communication and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf.

“We ratified the World Heritage Convention in 1988 and this is the first time we are standing, because we feel ready now,” he added.

He said Zuraina was the best choice to represent Malaysia due to her contributions in the field.
