No plans for excavated fort

Singapore’s National Heritage Board has no plans to gazette the foundations of the 100-year-old Fort Tanjong Katong for the time being. The fort was excavated in 2004 through a community grassroots effort and later reburied to prevent further deterioration to the stone foundations of the site.

Angkor Museum in a sorry state

Opened in 2007 to house sculpture from Angkor, the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum does not seem to be attracting enough visitors.

Malacca to host Zheng He seminar in July

A seminar of Admiral Zheng He’s (Cheng Ho) voyages to Malacca and beyond will be held in the Malaysian state of Malacca in July. The seminar is organised by the Melaka Museums Corporation, the Malaysian Museums Department, the Malaysian Museums Department, the International Zheng He Society and the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum.

Indonesia plans maritime museum for sunken treasures

In what seems to be a reaction to last week’s failed auction of the Cirebon shipwreck, Indonesia has announced plans to build a Maritime Museum to house and showcase artefacts that are retrieved from sunken wrecks in the future.

Indonesia's seas rich in shipwrecks, poor in protection

Sparked by the recent (failed) auction of artefacts from the Cirebon Shipwreck worth US$80 million, this editorial in the Jakarta Post discusses how much more protection is needed from the sunken treasures in Indonesian waters, such as the ratification of the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage.
